At the higher levels of competition it's not who knows more, but who can perform under the pressure of the competition. At Olympic and World Championship levels most athletes athletic abilities are close to, if not, equal. The difference in winners and losers is the mental toughness they bring to the arena and the mental strategies they use for staying engaged and focused during the game. The old adage is, "it's 80% mental and 20% physical." If that is true, why do most athletes and coaches rely solely on athletic ability and physicality to win competitions?
Yes, the physical part is extremely important. If an athlete can not perform the tasks of a sport, then they will be cut from the a team or eliminated early in a competition. But, when equally matched physically, mental toughness wins over talent, everytime!
But, that phrase alone is very vague. What exactly does it mean to be mentally tough and how do we get there?
